Some challenges still remain, but government says it will implement integrated health information systems next year.
The start-up phase for its national electronic health record system will finally begin in 2010, says the Department of Health.
While progress has been slow on the implementation of the system, the department says it will be ready to implement the system next year.

The development of an innovative and interactive web-based storyboard tutorial that introduces learners to the basic concepts of evidence-based practice (EBP) [http://www.lib.uci.edu/how/tutorials/EvidenceBasedPractice/] was the result of a collaboration between the Libraries' Health Sciences Education Team, the Department of Education and Outreach, and UCI's Distance Learning Center. The goal is to make it available on the Internet for learners to review at their own convenience. The tutorial is structured around an illustrative pediatric case scenario on Otitis Media and utilizes graphics, self assessment and voice-over narration. The case actively guides learners through the step-by-step EBP process: constructing a well-built answerable clinical question in therapy, researching articles using PubMed Clinical Queries, finding the evidence from a selected Randomized Controlled Trial, and a brief appraisal of the collected evidence. Since limited classroom time is allowed for EBP instruction in the undergraduate medical education curriculum, this tutorial provides additional instruction outside the classroom.

Thanks for the explanation. I think I understand. I sent the link to the LISTEN team members [www.listenuphealth.org] as we are also working on tutorials, the project director questioned why slide 20 referenced Wikipedia as source of knowledge. I didn't pay attention to the "did you know" button.

Any best practices for infusing EBP into the undergrad nursing program at the community college level? What competencies should we strive for with our infolit program to address their EBP needs? Most struggle with basic searching of the medical literature. We just added the Cochrane Library and Dynamed, besides offering CINAHL, OVID LW&W, and Medline. Seems to be a hard sell to the nursing faculty, but we are working collaboratively with a few. Any good activities and assessment tools at this level? Thanks! katalyn

We are contantly debating how to best teach PubMed to medical students. The struggle is between teaching them to be "good searchers" and teaching them to search like librarians, which may 'turn them off" and drive them to Google. How far do you go with medical students?

We have access to medline via PubMed, OVID, & EBSCO. Our patrons like using PubMed because of the link out option and because we use Loansome Doc. I am in Ohio so with OhioLINK we share statewide many online journals so link out option can be easy way to access this online material. Loansome Doc has also been very popular with patrons and library staff for ILL of articles.

Anyone doing a wiki for Morning Reports? Have any advice to share?
Inspired by the Web 2.0 MLA folks (including Connie, of course!), I've been playing with them. I've just set up a wiki for Morning Report in Pediatrics, with the help of our web developer, Dave McCabe. He did the hard parts and taught me - is teaching me - how to do them.

I am experimenting with a blog for morning report (www.euhguide.blogspot.com). I think a wiki would be great in that you would have more flexibility with how the information is formatted (eg, using tables to organize contents). That is the one thing I am struggling with in using a blog.

Now that I'm starting to get my feet wetter re: EBM, I'm getting comments from students that they would have liked this info sooner that their 3rd year. I agree that this whole information finding bit should be something that is part of a continuum. We currently do training sessions for Years 1 and 2, but I would like to coordinate all of it so that each year would build on the previous year. Has anyone developed such a program? Have you identified information competencies for each year of medical school? Please advise. Thanks,

It depends.
Librarian should be aware of what is involved with critically appraising an article so that they can support the practice of EBM. That support could be in doing literature searches that filter for the proper study design or providing EBM resources that already critically appraise the evidence (ACP Journal Club, Cochrane, etc.) or in teaching efficient searching skills that help retrieve the best level of evidence for the type of question being asked. Some librarians go further and actually review articles but that depends on the your skills, the type of service you are offering and the needs of your patrons. EBM offers lots of opportunities for Librarians but you need to work with the clinicians and nurses and decide together what services are needed and then make sure you are well trained and educated to provide them.
