Case: Your patient recently had a mild stroke. She is 80 years old and lives alone. You are concerned about her falling. Are there risk factors in this age group that you should be looking for?

P stroke, 80 yr, lives alone
I falling
C
O what are the risk factors
T prognosis
T RCT or cohort

SEARCH Strategy: CINAHL (((stroke AND falls AND risk) AND (DE "Aged, 80 and Over")) OR ((MH "Stroke Patients") OR (MH "Cerebral Vascular Accident")) AND ((MH "Fall Risk Assessment Tool") OR (MH "Risk Assessment") OR (MH "Risk Factors+")) AND (MH "Accidental Falls"))

PubMed stoke AND risk factors AND "Accidental Falls" [MeSH] Limit to 80 and over

TEACHING Tips: use combination of keywords and CINAHL headings for this question. no need to limit to study design with this small number of results. falls doesn't map you to accidental falls in PubMed, go to MeSH Database to find this

Case:
Your new patient has Bell's Palsy. She has recently read about electrical stimulation. She wants to know if this might have any beneficial effect on her motor or functional recovery.

P bell's palsy
I electrical stimulation
C
O improve motor or function
T therapy
T RCT

SEARCH Strategy: CINAHL electric* stimulation and bell* palsy--keyword, show how doesn't give you much
((MH "Electric Stimulation+") OR (MH "Electrical Stimulation, Functional")) AND ((MH "Facial Paralysis") OR (MH " Bell Palsy"))

TEACHING Tips:
electric* stimulation and bell* palsy--keywords search, show how doesn't give you much, need to use CINAHL headings!

Case: Your patient read this on the Internet and wants to know if this really works. "I would strongly suggest Botox injections. The injections will reduce the pain and spasm significantly and things will get better. Botox injections are usually done at a local hospital in the operating room on and outpatient basis every 2 to 3 months. I know because my child has spasms and spasticity from Cerebral Palsy." (from United Cerebral Palsy Discussion Group)

P cerebral palsy
I botox
C
O reduce spasticity
T therapy
T RCT

SEARCH Strategy: PubMed cerebral palsy AND spasticity AND ("Botulinum Toxin Type A/therapeutic use"[MeSH])

TEACHING Tips: searching botox will only search for botulinum Toxin Type A, is this appropriate? go to MeSH Database and search botox, also use subheading to get at specific aspect of Botox use.
