The person who has the most at stake when it comes to healthcare decisions-the patient-should be involved in research, advocacy and all segments of the health care system, according to a key finding of a report released today by The National Working Group on Evidence-Based Health Care. The Role of the Patient/Consumer in Establishing a Dynamic Clinical Research Continuum: Models of Patient/Consumer Inclusion describes successful examples of groundbreaking patient/consumer engagement in evidence-based healthcare. Anyone doing a wiki for Morning Reports? Have any advice to share?
Inspired by the Web 2.0 MLA folks (including Connie, of course!), I've been playing with them. I've just set up a wiki for Morning Report in Pediatrics, with the help of our web developer, Dave McCabe. He did the hard parts and taught me - is teaching me - how to do them.

Have you all seen this? This is a great tool for creating an EBM web site. It is definitely worth a look.

We are contantly debating how to best teach PubMed to medical students. The struggle is between teaching them to be "good searchers" and teaching them to search like librarians, which may 'turn them off" and drive them to Google. How far do you go with medical students?

Has anyone got a tool for syntehsising the evidence from a number of CATs? I need to to able to present the data in a format which the best evidence is highlighted, while staying within my non-clinical competence.

Now that I'm starting to get my feet wetter re: EBM, I'm getting comments from students that they would have liked this info sooner that their 3rd year. I agree that this whole information finding bit should be something that is part of a continuum. We currently do training sessions for Years 1 and 2, but I would like to coordinate all of it so that each year would build on the previous year. Has anyone developed such a program? Have you identified information competencies for each year of medical school? Please advise. Thanks,

I really like the idea of this tutorial - it is short, to the point, and has all the information the students need in one spot. In short, I wish I had thought of this!
I'm interested in learning about the online assignment. Could you comment on that? thanks Jeremy

Has anyone considered how the SBAR (Situation-Background-Assessment-Recommendation - a model for patient safety briefing) lines up with EBCP? Does anyone else find it is moving from clinical to nonclinical use fairly quickly, and from a communication tool to a decision recording tool. Jackie
For background, Google SBAR to locate the Institute for Healthcare Improvement explanation - or SBAR [ti] on Pubmed Medline |

A difficult challenge in teaching EBM to clinical students is teaching the methodological and statistical concepts needed to be able to read and understand research studies. This is especially true in clinical programs where the students are training to be clinicians, not researchers. Here are the links to the PowerPoint presentations developed by the biostatician who co-teaches EBM with me for our physician assistant students. I think they do a good job in getting across the concepts without getting bogged down in the math. He has given permission for others to use and adapt these with attribution.
Study Design Concepts - http://academics.ashs.edu/faculty/mkronenfeld/EBM powerpoints/Study_designRCB.ppt Statistical Concepts - http://academics.ashs.edu/faculty/mkronenfeld/EBM powerpoints/PA Stats.ppt These presentations were developed by Dr. Curtis Bay for the Fall, 2006 EBM class for the Physician Assistant Program at the A.T. Still Univ. of the Health Sciences – Mesa Campus.

OK, this may sound silly. But, now that I am going on rounds, I am very conscious of the fact that I stick out like a sore thumb. I am the only one with a white coat or scrubs. So it may be silly, but I want my white jacket! I want to be part of the team, and have "Medical Librarian" on my jacket. Anyone doing this? Anyone think this is crazy?

Our Medical School Curriculum (http://medschool.duke.edu/modules/som_curriculum/index.php?id=3) is a bit different from other schools. We only have one year of classroom work, a year of clinical experience, a research year, and then a year of electives. That first year is really jammed full and there is a lot of competition to get courses and lectures into it. We were able to interject some EBM training during 2 sessions on searching, one for PubMed and one for other resources. However this year the library was asked to help coordinate EBM training throughout the 4 years. Working with our "EBM Champions" were came up with an EBM curriculum (http://www.mclibrary.duke.edu/training/courses/ebm600/ebmcurriculum.pdf) that we are able to insert into various parts of the curriculum and that builds the student's skill level from question building to searching to critical appraisal.
